Hotel bookings finally top 2021 levels

After the two-year long pandemic, travel platforms are finally seeing a strong comeback in booking volumes. A MakeMyTrip spokesperson said Activity area that hotel bookings for the Good Friday/Baisakhi long weekend exceeded December 2021 levels.

OYO, the large SoftBank-backed hotelier, also expects booking volumes during the period to be the highest since the pandemic in 2020. OYO said it received over 3.1 lakh bookings for the festive weekend of April 8-10 (Navratri, Durga Puja and Ashtami), surpassing its New Year weekend volumes.

On MakeMyTrip, April 14 and 15 (Thursday and Friday) have the highest registrations for hotels and homestays, while for flights, April 15 and 17 top the charts.

“Goa, Dehradun and Jaipur are among the most popular leisure destinations while in terms of customer traffic, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore have emerged as the top Indian cities,” a MakeMyTrip spokesperson added.

MakeMyTrip is an online travel aggregator headquartered in Gurugram.

Weekend boost

Pankaj Parwanda, co-founder and chief strategy officer of backpacker hostel brand goSTOPS, said, “Our booking volumes were up 25% from the previous weekend and 45% from weekdays. Favorite destinations for this weekend are Dehradun, Kasol, Mukteshwar, Mussoorie, Munnar and Nainital.

Comparing the increase in weekend booking volumes to weekdays, OYO said it observed a 134% increase in weekend bookings compared to weekday bookings during the weekend (from 8 to 10 April) in 2022, compared to the 111% increase in 2019. The company attributed the boost to pent-up travel demand and rising vaccination rates.

“Travel optimism is at an all-time high across the country. As restrictions are eased and air travel bans are lifted, travelers are eager to celebrate festivals with loved ones, go on vacation summer and make the most of their long weekends. This surge during the festive weekend is a testament to the travel boom that awaits us in 2022. Overall, this summer should be the season for travel recovery before the pandemic,” said Shreerang Godbole, SVP – Product & Chief Service Officer, OYO.

As of March 31, 2021, OYO had a network of 157,000 hotel and home storefronts in more than 35 countries, including India and those in Europe and Southeast Asia.
